How the Chicken Dance originated in Tulsa (2024)

The Linde Oktoberfest has returned to Tulsa.

The annual celebration was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. While there are plenty of fun events and delicious food to enjoy this week, it's important to remember the chicken dance.

Did you know that the infamous dance originated here in Tulsa?

The song was originally written in Germany in the 1950s, crafted from a tune from musician Werner Thomas. He initially named it "Der Ententanz" or "The Duck Dance."

The Duck Dance crept over to America in the late 1970s. A German band decided to play the song at the 1981 Tulsa Oktoberfest. Organizers tried to find a duck costume for the dance, but could only find a chicken costume from a local TV station. Eventually, "The Duck Dance" became the chicken dance.

History was made here in Tulsa.
