How long does it take to pay off student loans?
The standard student loan payoff time for federal student loans is 10 years. However, repayment time depends on the loan amount and how much you can pay a month. A bachelor's degree-holder with the average amount of federal loan debt would need to pay just over $300 a month to pay off their loan within 10 years.
Debt | Monthly Payment | Payoff Time |
---|---|---|
$40,000 | $424 | 10 years |
$40,000 | $461 | 9 years |
$40,000 | $565 | 7 years |
$40,000 | $755 | 5 years |
The average student borrower takes 20 years to pay off their student loan debt. Some professional graduates take over 45 years to repay student loans. 21% of borrowers see their total student loan debt balance increase in the first 5 years of their loan.
How long does paying off $100K in student loans take? Although the standard repayment plan is typically 10 years, some loans and repayment plans have longer terms, so you could be repaying for 20 or even 30 years.
For example, if you had $70,000 in federal student loans and made payments under the standard 10-year repayment plan with a 6.22% interest rate, you'd end up with a monthly payment of $785 and a total repayment cost of $94,188. Thankfully, several strategies could help you more easily manage $70,000 in student loans.
Approximately 13% of all Americans had federal student loan debt in 2021. In 2023, 9.9 million borrowers have between $20,000-$40,000 of student loan debt.
If you want to attend college and are committed to doing the work and succeeding, then $10,000 total debt for four years is pretty trivial. Most such loans are subsidized federal direct (aka Stafford) loans, and you don't pay interest on those until six months after leaving school.
Depending on your loan type and repayment plan, you could be in debt for 10 to 30 years. So, how much is too much student loan debt? The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends borrowing no more than you expect to earn in one year from an entry-level position after graduation.
The good news is that student loan payments don't have to go on forever. If you have federal student loans and are making payments under an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan, you may be able to have your loans forgiven after 20 years.
How much are student loan payments? The average monthly federal student loan payment for recent bachelor's degree-recipients is about $300. People generally borrow more and have higher interest rates for graduate degrees.
Is 100k too much student debt?
It's hard to say what's too much for everyone, broadly across the board. However, borrowing $100,000 or more is considered to be a lot and isn't normal for the average student. Most jobs don't pay over $100,000 right out of school so it could be a struggle to have that much student loan debt.
But you might be surprised to learn that there are no FAFSA income limits to qualify for aid. For example, a family with a household income of hundreds of thousands of dollars could be helped by other factors in the FAFSA formula, including school costs and the number of siblings also attending school.
A total college debt of $120,000 would put you well, well into the top 1% of borrowers for an undergraduate degree. In fact, it would be hard to even accomplish this; you'd have to use Parent PLUS loans or private loans (for which you'd need to qualify) or both.
Can You Get A Mortgage And Buy A House With Student Loans? Yes, home buyers with student loans can qualify for a mortgage because you don't need to be 100% debt-free to buy a house. However, when a lender evaluates your application, they will look at your current debt, including your student loans.
Having a student loan will affect your credit score. Your student loan amount and payment history are a part of your credit report. Your credit reports—which impact your credit score—will contain information about your student loans, including: Amount that you owe on your loans.
While $30,000 is about average for student debt, you can take steps to pay it off sooner than average.
Current student loan interest rates
About 92 percent of student loan debt is federal, with interest rates ranging from 5.50 percent to 8.05 percent. Average private student loan interest rates, on the other hand, can range from around 4.50 percent to almost 17 percent.
The average student loan debt borrowed for a four-year bachelor's degree was $30,500 in 2019-2020, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The average federal student loan debt has more than doubled since 2007, from $18,233 in 2007 to $37,090 at the end of 2023.
Based on our analysis, if you are a man and owe more than $100,000, or a woman and owe more than $70,000, you have high student loan debt and your debt is likely not worth the income you'll earn over your lifetime.
$57,500 for undergraduates-No more than $23,000 of this amount may be in subsidized loans. $138,500 for graduate or professional students-No more than $65,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans. The graduate aggregate limit includes all federal loans received for undergraduate study.
What to do if you maxed out financial aid?
If you've exhausted other options and still need additional funds to help you pay for school, contact your school's financial aid office to find out if you're eligible for additional federal student loans. Just remember to borrow only what you need to pay your educational expenses.
A loan goes into default after a borrower fails to make a payment for at least 270 days, or about nine months, which can result in further financial consequences. A default can further damage your credit score, making it harder to buy a car or house. It could take years to establish good credit again.
The data is clear: paying for a college degree with student loans may be worth it. But that doesn't minimize the burden of a large balance. Luckily, there are ways to reduce college costs. By borrowing less, it may be easier to tackle student loans after graduation.
By the numbers: Borrowers between 35 and 49 years old owe the most in federal student loans, according to Federal Student Aid data. Details: Women typically borrow more for college than men, according to NerdWallet, a personal finance company.
Borrowing the maximum Direct Loan amount ($31,000) is a good rule of thumb for students, and parents need to assess how much they can borrow by considering factors such as their mortgage, credit card balances, debt for other children, and retirement plans.
