How much cash do wealthy people hold?
High net worth individuals — defined by Capgemini as those with $1 million or more in investable assets — held over 34% of their portfolios in cash as of January 2023. That's the highest level since at least 2002. It's also significantly higher than the 24% cash exposure these investors had last year.
Studies indicate that millionaires may have, on average, as much as 25% of their money in cash. This is to offset any market downturns and to have cash available as insurance for their portfolio. Cash equivalents, financial instruments that are almost as liquid as cash.
Someone who has $1 million in liquid assets, for instance, is usually considered to be a high net worth (HNW) individual. You might need $5 million to $10 million to qualify as having a very high net worth while it may take $30 million or more to be considered ultra-high net worth.
High-net-worth individuals are opting to keep most of their assets in cash right now. Stocks are still a popular choice for wealthy investors. You don't have to be rich to come up with a plan for your own money.
I've worked in Wealth Management serving people worth 8, 9 and 10 figures for many years, and based on my experience, I can tell you in reality, when a billionaire stores $50 million in their bank account that's already a lot. And hey, that may only represent a mere 5% of their overall wealth.
$2.2 million
That's how much net worth an American needs to be considered wealthy in 2023, according to the Charles Schwab Modern Wealth Survey.
According to Schwab's 2023 Modern Wealth Survey, its seventh annual, Americans said it takes an average net worth of $2.2 million to qualify a person as being wealthy. (Net worth is the sum of your assets minus your liabilities.)
If you have more than $1 million saved in retirement accounts, you are in the top 3% of retirees. According to EBRI estimates based on the latest Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances, 3.2% of retirees have over $1 million in their retirement accounts, while just 0.1% have $5 million or more.
For most people, it's not anywhere near enough to retire on, but accumulating that much cash is usually a sign that something's going right with your finances. That said there's nothing magical about a six-digit number — if you think you can reach financial stability with a smaller amount, then great!

Cash equivalents are financial instruments that are almost as liquid as cash and are popular investments for millionaires. Examples of cash equivalents are money market mutual funds, certificates of deposit, commercial paper and Treasury bills. Some millionaires keep their cash in Treasury bills.
Is it better to own assets or cash? Both assets and cash can be good investments. Ideally, you want to have a balanced portfolio with a good amount of liquid cash in the bank, and strong assets that are likely to rise in value in the long term. The main benefits of cash are simplicity and ease of use.
Millionaires can insure their money by depositing funds in FDIC-insured accounts, NCUA-insured accounts, through IntraFi Network Deposits, or through cash management accounts. They may also allocate some of their cash to low-risk investments, such as Treasury securities or government bonds.
The Sept. 8 report said the minimum annual income required in 2023 for a family of four to be middle class in California is $69,064. Alabama and Arkansas both required the lowest minimum income to be considered middle class, at $51,798.
How much is too much? The general rule is to have three to six months' worth of living expenses (rent, utilities, food, car payments, etc.) saved up for emergencies, such as unexpected medical bills or immediate home or car repairs. The guidelines fluctuate depending on each individual's circ*mstance.
Age by decade | Average net worth | Median net worth |

“In order to be considered "well off" how much money does one need to make a week in America on average?” The median household income in America is about $60,000/yr. If we take “well off” to mean “above average”, then the 75% percentile of the income distribution is about $110,000/yr. But this varies a lot by location.
Does net worth include home?
At its most basic, net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. To calculate your net worth, tally the value of all or your assets, including bank accounts, investments, and perhaps the value of your home or vacation home.
Among the 47 million households headed by someone age 60 or older, 7% had household investable assets of at least $2 million, Drinkwater said. Only 6% of the 89 million households in the U.S. headed by someone 40 to 85 years old has that amount, Drinkwater said.
Once you have $1 million in assets, you can look seriously at living entirely off the returns of a portfolio. After all, the S&P 500 alone averages 10% returns per year. Setting aside taxes and down-year investment portfolio management, a $1 million index fund could provide $100,000 annually.
How long will $1 million in retirement savings last? In more than 20 U.S. states, a million-dollar nest egg can cover retirees' living expenses for at least 20 years, a new analysis shows. It's worth noting that most Americans are nowhere near having that much money socked away.
More Than Half of Americans Have Less Than $10,000 Saved
Going up a little more, just 6% have between $100,001 and $200,000 saved. Few Americans have saved more than $300,000: 4% have between $350,001 and $500,000.
