Is Option Trading really worth it?
The biggest advantage to buying options is that you have great upside potential with losses limited only to the option's premium. However, this can also be a drawback since options will expire worthless if the stock does not move enough to be in-the-money.
Trading options for a living is possible if you're willing to put in the effort. Traders can make anywhere from $1,000 per month to $200,000+ per year. Of course, many traders make more, but it all depends on your trading account size.
Not everyone can be a successful options trader. However, some can and do get quite rich trading options. Becoming a successful options trader requires a specific skill set, personality type, and attitude, like any undertaking.
Most people fail at options trading because they have not taken the time to learn how options work and how volatility affects options pricing.
Despite its many benefits, options trading carries substantial risk of loss, and it is very speculative in nature. Not everyone can become a successful options trader. Like any other business, becoming a successful options trader requires a certain skill set, personality type, and attitude.
However, the odds of the options trade being profitable are very much in your favor, at 75%. So would you risk $500, knowing that you have a 75% chance of losing your investment and a 25% chance of making a profit?
The success rate of option seller is around 80 to 90% with a great risk involved compared to option buyers success rate with in 2 to 10% with limited risk of loosing the capital deployed.
The option sellers stand a greater risk of losses when there is heavy movement in the market. So, if you have sold options, then always try to hedge your position to avoid such losses. For example, if you have sold at the money calls/puts, then try to buy far out of the money calls/puts to hedge your position.
As of Feb 10, 2024, the average annual pay for an Options Trader in the United States is $112,369 a year. Just in case you need a simple salary calculator, that works out to be approximately $54.02 an hour. This is the equivalent of $2,160/week or $9,364/month.
In March 2015, an unidentified trader made a profit of over $2.4 million in just 28 minutes by buying $110,000 worth of calls on Altera stock. It all started with a news release saying that Intel was in talks to buy Altera.
Why you should avoid options trading?
Risking Your Principal. Like other securities including stocks, bonds and mutual funds, options carry no guarantees. Be aware that it's possible to lose the entire principal invested, and sometimes more. As an options holder, you risk the entire amount of the premium you pay.
Options contracts give investors the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset like a stock at a specified price. This type of trading can be risky and speculative, and it doesn't have a place in all investors' portfolios.
Options trading is more complicated because it's investing on the potential movement of assets rather than the purchase of those assets directly, and it's more risky because options contracts aren't for forever, there's a time component to them.
Establish Strategy Dedicated to Options Trading
As an equity trader, the most common strategy is to buy low and sell high. If you use the same logic for options trading, then you are likely to favour Out-of-the-Money (OTM) call options as they are usually cheaper and you can hope to make high returns when you sell.

There are many reasons for this, but some of the most common include: Lack of knowledge: Many traders enter the F&O market without a good understanding of how it works.
His agency, the Securities and Exchange Board of India, known as Sebi, says 90% of active retail traders lose money trading options and other derivative contracts. In the year ended March 2022, the latest for which figures are available, investors lost $5.4 billion.
However, even after decades of such development, still only about 5% of options traders ever make money from options trading... why is that so?
