His training was for physical stamina, choreography, street dance, and he learned tap dance while a young man. The rest was Jackson's natural dance and practiced moves. Jackson had a dancer's body. His mother, Katherine, speaks of when Michael was a toddler, he was jammin' to the rhythm of the washing machine.
"Michael was beginning to develop the vitiligo," Cicely continued. "And it started on his hand ... The glove was to camouflage it. That's how that glove came into being."
Michael taught himself after studying the greats throughout his childhood. He would stand in the wings, on stage, and watch people like Sammy Davies Jr, Jackie Wilson etc. And he absorbed it all in. When, later he had his own dance studio he choreographed for his own shows and for other people.
Jackson learned the moonwalk from friends
Jackson said in his memoir that he learned the move from some friends, and he worked on it in the studio. Because Jackson was such a meticulous dancer — with a capacity for extreme control but also quickness — he gave the moonwalk a slick perfection.
For me I think it took me about 1-2 weeks of practicing it daily (during my daily tech skill practice, which is like an hour) before it finally 'clicked' with me. It's very hard to learn, but when you do master it, it's great because the muscle memory will be engrained in you for a looong long time.
The moonwalk, made famous by Michael Jackson, is challenging because it involves a precise combination of weight-shifting, balance, and smooth gliding footwork. It requires coordination and practice to create the illusion of walking backward while moving forward.
He worked with many choreographers such as Micheal Peters and Vince Patterson to name just two. As he was a talented and technically well trained dancer like most other professionals in the pop field, he would put their own spin on it as well.
Jackson's unique vocal style and distinct dance moves have become iconic trademarks of his influence on music. His smooth, high-pitched vocals and signature vocal ad-libs have been imitated by countless artists, and his intricate dance routines, such as the moonwalk, continue to inspire generations of performers.
Why did Michael put tape on his fingers?
Michael Jackson wore white tape on his fingers so that audience members further away could see the fingers and follow the moves he made with his hands while dancing. He wore white socks so they could similarly follow his feet.
Jackson was intrigued by baseball being considered America's favorite pastime. "Why do only baseball players get to wear shin guards?" Jackson once asked Bush. "I'm going to wear them." The equipment also served to protect Jackson's knees and shins from his own athletic drills during his aerodynamic dance routines.
He could be at an award ceremony in the 90s speaking in a high voice and then from home videos from the same time, his voice is much deeper. Some say Michael adopted the high speaking voice as a part of his image and used it as his celebrity persona and this could very well be true.
Paterson says 'Thriller' is well-known throughout the world and is the most danced piece of choreography in history. “There's nothing really, really difficult about 'Thriller' if it's broken down and you learn how to do it.
Going by the ten thousand (10,000) hour rule of mastery, Michael Jackson should be more master than he was... Yes I said it since he was using eighteen (18) hours to practice and rehearse a day.
MICHAEL JACKSON'S DRIVING-INSTRUCTOR (John Diggs)...
Some of them included James Brown, Fred Astaire, Bob Fosse, Jackie Wilson, Gene Kelly, Marcel Marceau, Sammy Davis Jr., Charlie Chaplin and Jeffrey Daniel.
Dancer and singer Jeffrey Daniel was a member of the R&B group Shalamar and pioneered the dance move the backslide — which, after he taught it to Michael Jackson, became known as the moonwalk.
Age restrictions
Walkers must be at least 13 years of age on the day of the MoonWalk.
Who did the longest moonwalk?
The longest continuous moonwalk lasted for 2 hours 30 minutes 50 seconds and was achieved by Michael Frank (Germany) in Eppingen, Germany, on 30 Janurary 2011.
That walk was his own, but Jackson absorbed some of his other moves from his forebears. He didn't invent the moonwalk, for instance — tap dancers stretching back at least to the 1940s thrilled audiences with what was called the backslide — but he perfected it.
Though a pro can moonwalk even in hiking boots, it's better to learn with as little traction as possible. Wearing socks will make it much easier for you to practice your moves and glide across the floor. Once you've mastered the “sock walk,” put on some sneakers for added challenge.
Several have tried it and it is possible to do after much practicing, but it remains quite complex for beginners. The dance was dubbed the moonwalk, because it seemed as if the performer was walking on the moon while doing it.
The supreme video star of the 1980s was of course, Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson made a major impact on the direction of jazz dance with his creative dance steps, his videos, his presentation and his choreography, most of which was done by Michael Peters, or Jackson and Peters as a team.
