What are student loan refunds?
A student loan refund is the result of a student borrowing a loan in order to cover some of the college costs that are not billed directly to a student's account (such as books and supplies or an off-campus apartment).
What is a refund check from a college? A refund from a college is the result of having more total funding on your account than the actual balance due. Funding on your account comes from a combination of sources including, financial aid, scholarships, student loans, cash payments, and other miscellaneous payments.
Student loan payment refund is surplus funds given to a student or borrower when their educational expenses, such as tuition, are covered by federal or private student loans, as well as any scholarships or grants.
Typically, student loans do not get deposited in your bank account. Instead, the loans are disbursed directly to the school where it is applied to tuition payments and room and board.
The student loan refund is not taxable on your federal return. While all federal student loan forgiveness is temporarily tax-exempt at the federal level, this is temporary under the provisions of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
After your school deducts what's needed to pay for expenses such as tuition and room and board, it will disburse any remaining money to you for education-related expenses. But these expenses aren't just books and class fees. Student loan funds can be used to pay for rent, groceries and more.
Key Takeaways. When your student loan debt is forgiven, you'll be sent notice of how much is canceled and whether you still owe anything more. If your loan is discharged because of fraud or deception on the part of the school, you may get a refund of some payments.
Return it to pay off student loans
Students don't have to accept or use their refund check. If you're not in need of extra money, you can return the refund before it starts to accrue interest. Returning a refund check is essentially paying off a chunk of your loan balance early.
Any borrower with ED-held loans that have accumulated time in repayment of at least 20 or 25 years will see automatic forgiveness, even if the loans are not currently on an IDR plan. Borrowers with FFELP loans held by commercial lenders or Perkins loans not held by ED can benefit if they consolidate into Direct Loans.
However, the government has paused this program and other collection activities. The Fresh Start program for borrowers with previously defaulted student loans will prevent withheld tax refunds through at least September 2024. And borrowers won't newly fall into default as payments resume.
How does loan refund work?
But if your loan is larger than your bursar account balance (to include things like books, transportation, etc.), and there's money left over, your school will likely issue that money to you, either as a check or a direct deposit into your bank account. This is commonly referred to as a "student loan refund."
In most cases, your child's school will give you your loan money by crediting it to your child's school account to pay tuition, fees, room, board, and other authorized charges. If there is money left over, the school will pay it to you.
Spring Refund Date: 3/08/2024
Spring refund date (remaining 75% of Federal Pell Grant) and other financial aid programs, including Federal Direct Loans, will be March 08, 2024. After March 8th, refunds will be issued weekly as students become eligible.
Student Financial Services encourages all students to enroll in direct deposit. Direct Deposit refunds are processed and disbursed by the University within 2-3 business days.
Note: As part of the Fresh Start Program, borrowers with eligible defaulted loans are receiving certain relief measures, including wages not being garnished. This relief will continue through at least September 2024.

You may notice your former servicer has cleared your loan account. For example, your loan balance may come up as “paid in full” on your former servicer's website or on your credit report. This does not mean you've received loan forgiveness. This is part of the loan transfer process.
Ultimately, any leftover loan money is yours to use however you'd like. While you won't go to jail for spending student loan money on expenses unrelated to school, you'll likely pay more over the long run because of the extra interest that accrues (grows) on those borrowed funds.
The school determines the final tuition amount due, taking grants and scholarships into account. If your student loan covers more than that amount, you will receive a refund from your school. Use the excess funds only for education-related expenses. These are expenses that directly or indirectly support your studies.
Why did my student loans disappear from my credit report? Your student loan disappeared from your credit report because your loan servicer made a mistake, or you fell into default more than 7 years ago. Remember, even if your loans no longer appear on your credit report, you're still legally obligated to repay them.
Why did my student loan disappeared from my credit report?
Federal student loans which have been reported to be in default for seven years or more must be deleted from a consumer's credit record. Under the Department of Education's Fresh Start Program specifically, the Department deleted reporting about loans that were delinquent for more than seven years .
As long as your loans were in good standing at the time they were discharged and your accounts are being reported properly to the credit reporting bureaus, you won't see a huge difference in your score. On the other hand, you could see your score drop if your account wasn't in good standing prior to the discharge.
Refunds for all types of financial aid will begin 30 days after the start of the semester. You will receive loan funds in two disbursem*nts each semester.
Over COVID I paid off the remainder of my student loans (about $12,000). In October I applied for a refund and several months ago I received a refund check for the amount I paid off during the payment freeze. I haven't spent any of it and have just had it sitting in my savings.
How do I know if my student loans are forgiven? If you qualify for loan forgiveness under PSLF, Teacher Loan Forgiveness or IDR discharge, the loan servicer or Department of Education will send you a notification letter. Depending on your account settings, you may receive the letter electronically or via mail.
