Where do multi millionaires keep their money?
According to a Private Bank Study by Bank of America a common place for millionaires to keep their money is in stocks, mutual funds, and retirement accounts with over 55% of their wealth held in these investments. However, there are also a significant number of millionaires who keep their money in real estate.
Rank | Asset | Average Proportion of Total Wealth |
---|---|---|
1 | Primary and Secondary Homes | 32% |
2 | Equities | 18% |
3 | Commercial Property | 14% |
4 | Bonds | 12% |
“J.P. Morgan Private Bank is the more elite program serving ultra-high-net-worth individuals,” Naghibi said. “It offers comprehensive services in savings, checking and retirement account management. But, more than anything, it gives clients access to their bank and team with a concierge feel.”
It might seem contrary to some people's assumptions about the wealthy, but the Capgemini report found that HNWI keep a large and growing portion of their assets in cash and cash equivalents, like short-term mutual funds or certificates of deposit.
Some occupations with a higher likelihood of producing millionaires include: Entrepreneurship: Starting and growing a successful business can lead to significant wealth. Investment Banking: High salaries and bonuses in the financial industry can contribute to wealth accumulation.
Millionaires can insure their money by depositing funds in FDIC-insured accounts, NCUA-insured accounts, through IntraFi Network Deposits, or through cash management accounts. They may also allocate some of their cash to low-risk investments, such as Treasury securities or government bonds.
Many millionaires keep a lot of their money in cash or highly liquid cash equivalents. They establish an emergency account before ever starting to invest. Millionaires bank differently than the rest of us. Any bank accounts they have are handled by a private banker who probably also manages their wealth.
These limits can be imposed per account or as an aggregate across all your accounts. For example, you might be capped at $1 million for a single deposit account and $3 million across all of your accounts. Depending on your bank, the limits may be higher, lower or nonexistent.
Demand Deposit Account (DDA) & Money Market Deposit Account (MMDA) DDA/MMDA allows you to place funds into demand deposit and/or money market deposit accounts. You can deposit up to $100 million for each account type.
The top asset class among the ultra-rich was cash and term deposits in the first half of 2023, followed by shares, real estate and exchange-traded funds, according to research that shows how wealthy investors carve up their portfolios.

Outside of work, they have more investments that might generate interest, dividends, capital gains or, if they own real estate, rent. Real estate investments, as seen above under property, offer another benefit because they can be depreciated and deducted from federal income tax – another tactic used by wealthy people.
Some people also get lucky with ultra-high-risk investments. These are all rarities, though. The vast majority of millionaires get there by building good financial habits and following them for decades. They spend less than they earn, they don't take on expensive debt, and they invest regularly.

How much do millionaires keep in their checking account?
“Millionaires' checking accounts are all over the place,” Thompson said. “Some clients will only keep enough to pay for immediate expenses (e.g., $10,000) and others will have $150,000 in checking on any given day.”
Once you have $1 million in assets, you can look seriously at living entirely off the returns of a portfolio. After all, the S&P 500 alone averages 10% returns per year. Setting aside taxes and down-year investment portfolio management, a $1 million index fund could provide $100,000 annually.
- Understand FDIC limits.
- Use bank networks to maximize coverage.
- Open accounts with different ownership categories.
- Open accounts at several banks.
- Consider brokerage accounts.
- Deposit excess funds at a credit union.
- Other strategies for insuring excess deposits.
For starters, you're going to need a bank that can handle all that money. Not all banks are created equal, and some may not be able to handle such a large deposit. Doane & Doane can help you find a bank that will be able to handle your newfound wealth.
That amount typically depends on the bank. Some banks can impose maximum limits on the amount you can keep on deposit. For example, your bank might limit you to keeping $1 million in an individual savings account and $10 million across all accounts. Banks can impose these limits for different reasons.
