Written by Doc Pomus, “Save the Last Dance for Me” was – according to his friend and onetime collaborator Lou Reed – penned by Pomus on his wedding day, inspired by the fact that he was in a wheelchair and watching his new bride dancing with their guests.
The song was first recorded in 1960 by The Drifters, with Ben E King on lead vocal, and produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who added a Latin-tinged rhythm and shimmering strings.

In 1980, at age 14, Miller was given the responsibility for choreographing and coaching for one of her mother's dance competition teams. Miller eventually took over the studio in 1995 and renamed it Reign Dance Productions.
