What banks in USA are in trouble?
The collapses of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in March 2023—then the second- and third-largest bank failures in U.S. history—took consumers by surprise. Subsequently, three more banks failed in 2023: First Republic Bank in May, Heartland Tri-State Bank in July and Citizens Bank of Sac City in November.

Your money is safe at Capital One
Capital One, N.A., is a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), an independent federal agency. The FDIC insures balances up to $250,000 held in various types of consumer and business deposit accounts.
2024 in Brief
There are no bank failures in 2024. See detailed descriptions below. For more bank failure information on a specific year, select a date from the drop down menu to the right or select a month within the graph.
USA . Capital One's threat of distress is less than 3% at the present time. It is unlikely to undergo any financial crunch in the next 24 months.
Which bank has a bad reputation?
The worst banks are Wells Fargo and Citibank. Wells Fargo is the worst bank overall, with a high percentage of unresolved complaints and loss of Better Business Bureau accreditation. Citibank has a string of high-profile cases involving operational chaos and regulatory fines.
Generally, credit unions are viewed as safer than banks, although deposits at both types of financial institutions are usually insured at the same dollar amounts. The FDIC insures deposits at most banks, and the NCUA insures deposits at most credit unions.
Still, the FDIC itself doesn't have unlimited money. If enough banks flounder at once, it could deplete the fund that backstops deposits. However, experts say even in that event, bank patrons shouldn't worry about losing their FDIC-insured money.
- Alliant Credit Union: Best credit union.
- Ally Bank: Best bank; best CDs.
- Charles Schwab Bank: Best for ATM access.
- Chase: Best for sign-up bonuses; best for branch access.
- Discover® Bank: Best online banking experience.
Chase is the largest bank in the country, holding over $3.38 trillion in assets. Bank of America is the second-largest bank with over $2.45 trillion in assets. Wells Fargo is the third-largest bank, holding over $1.7 trillion in assets.
The Short Answer: Yes. Share: The IRS probably already knows about many of your financial accounts, and the IRS can get information on how much is there. But, in reality, the IRS rarely digs deeper into your bank and financial accounts unless you're being audited or the IRS is collecting back taxes from you.

First Republic Bank, Silicon Valley Bank, and Signature Bank have shut down in 2023. Since the year 2000, there have been 562 bank failures. There are still fewer failed banks in recent economic downturns than during the Great Depression, though.
In most cases, the FDIC will try to find another banking institution to acquire the failed bank. If that happens, customers' accounts will simply transfer over to the new bank. You will get information about the transition, and you will likely get new debit cards and checks (if applicable).
Which three banks are collapsing?
Three banks in the U.S. (Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank and Silvergate) have collapsed since early March. The collapses of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank are the two biggest bank failures since 2008.
1. Wells Fargo & CompanyWells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) is the undisputed safest bank in America, now that JP Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) has come under scrutiny — even if Chase has about $1 trillion more in assets.
Wells Fargo, along with thousands of other financial institutions, is FDIC-insured. FDIC insurance limits cap at $250,000. The FDIC insures certificates of deposit and money market accounts, along with traditional checking and savings accounts.
Two of the biggest names in banking — Capital One and Discover — made headlines recently after Capital One announced its plans to acquire Discover in a transaction valued at $35.3 billion.
